Bite Toothpaste Bits Review: Sustainability in a Travel-Sized Package

SmarterTravel

If you’ve been scoping out the sustainability scene on social media lately, chances are you’ve run across an ad for Bite. Though they may look like something out of an astronaut’s toiletry kit, these tiny tablets are ultra-packable, eco-friendly, and could be the next step towards a zero-waste on-the-go self-care routine. I put Bite to the test for a month to see if these toothpaste bits will be a new staple in my suitcase.

How to Use Toothpaste Tablets

Like me, your first question may be—how do toothpaste tablets work? Bite Toothpaste Bits are the toothpaste you’re used to, compressed down into individual tablets the size of a standard pill. They have all the ingredients that make a traditional toothpaste effective and refreshing but without any unnecessary ingredients, such as palm oil or titanium dioxide. To brush your teeth, simply bite down on a tablet and brush with a wet toothbrush.

What Makes Bite Different?

Bite was founded with the dual mission of reducing plastic waste and creating a greater level of consciousness about what ingredients go into our personal care products. Bite products are made using recyclable and biodegradable materials and their formulas are simple and transparent. A full ingredient list for each of their products can be found on their FAQ page.

How Do Bite Toothpaste Bits Measure Up?

Taste and Texture: 8/10

I am a mint traditionalist when it comes to toothpaste and I was pleasantly surprised by how much minty flavor was packed into these tiny bits. My breath felt as fresh and my mouth felt as clean as if I had used my usual toothpaste. If mint isn’t your thing, you can choose from several other flavors including berry and limited edition coco mango.

There were some bits left after the initial bite-down that created an odd texture at first, but a combination of water and crunching broke them down until it was no different than any other toothpaste.

Ease of Use: 10/10

If it’s possible to create a process easier than squeezing a tube of toothpaste, it would be this. It takes about 15 to 20 seconds of brushing before it starts to foam up, but given time one tablet will easily last your whole brushing routine.

Cost: 6/10

A one month supply of toothpaste bites cost me $12 with an additional $5 for shipping. They do offer some deals—if you sign up for a recurring subscription, you can save 38 percent (lowering the price from $48 to $30) on a four month supply. Breaking that down per month, it will run you about $7.50/month with the discount offer or about $12/month without. For comparison, my usual Colgate Optic White costs $5 to $8 depending on the retailer and lasts about two months.

Portability: 10/10

Bite takes home an easy win for portability. With my Bite products and a collapsible travel toothbrush I could fit my entire routine in my pocket. These bits are also TSA-approved, meaning you can toss them in your carry-on without issue.

Sustainability: 10/10

My initial hesitation surrounding Bite was accumulating dozens of little glass vials to add to my already overflowing cabinet of recycled mason jars. However, Bite refills come in a compostable paper package that you simply empty into your existing jar.

Bite Toothpaste Pros:

  • Highly packable size
  • Refillable vials means less plastic waste
  • Transparent ingredient list
  • Easy subscription service

Bite Toothpaste Cons:

  • The initial texture is a bit chalky
  • More expensive than standard toothpaste
